The Story
Built by Firemen, Inspired by Experience
In 2001, the Operations Chief at Orange County Fire Authority tasked a committee with a unique challenge: create a standardized flagpole for the department's fire apparatus. The existing metal flagpoles caused significant damage—costing thousands of dollars in repairs—whenever they were struck. Among the committee members was Jim Silva, a dedicated firefighter who would later retire after 32 years of service with the OCFA. Jim’s role on the committee was to design a solution that was both functional and durable while protecting the rigs from damage—and to manufacture that design.
After brainstorming with the flag pole committee, it was clear that incorporating a spring mechanism would be key. Over six months, Jim dedicated countless hours in his home workshop and at the station, testing designs and materials. Eventually, he developed the perfect spring—flexible enough to bend on impact but strong enough to hold a flag steady, even at high speeds.
The result was a success. Jim built 85 flagpoles for his department, and they quickly gained attention as crews traveled to fires and base camps. Other fire departments saw them in action and began requesting poles for their rigs.
That’s when Flag Spring was born. Built by Firemen for Firemen, Flag Spring has grown from a small solution to a nationwide success. Today, over 1,000 of his innovative flag spring poles are proudly installed on fire apparatuses across the country, flying the flag with pride while protecting vehicles from costly damage.
